Chemainus
History and Culture
Chemainus is located just off the TransCanada Highway, an hour North of Victoria and a half hour South of Nanaimo. Steeped in rich history and culture, Chemainus was originally a quiet string of first nations settlements that grew to a town filled with opportunity.
The native shaman and prophet “Tsa-meeun-is” (Broken Chest) is the inspiration for Chemainu’s name. Legend says that in order to become a powerful chief, the shaman survived a massive wound in this chest. As a sign of respect, his people named their community after him, the Stz’uminus First Nation.
The railroad was first developed in 1880s, this causing a growth spurt of population, in 1920s the town population rising to 600 people. Statistics Canada designated Chemainus a census populated area. Cheimainus population, by 2011, had 3035 residents.

Next to the B.C Forestry Museum, on Island Highway, lies the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Refuge. Somenos Lake is part of the Pacific Coast flyway. Here, thousands of birds cut in from Cowichan through Somenos Marsh, up to Cowichan Valley, and then over the west side of Vancouver Island. More than 200 species of birds have been identified on the Marsh. A great festival that is held at Somenos Marsh is Great Blue Heron Festival. Keeping this wonderful place as pristine as possible is a mission for more than 300 members.

The Chemainus Valley Museum is operated by the Chemainus Valley Historical Society, a non-profit organization. The Museum is located in the beautiful Water Wheel Park, found in the centre of town. Off to the side of the Museum is a wonderful observation point which overlooks the site of the first and present sawmill. Looking out, you can see the large ships, log booms and busy harbour framed by the beautiful Gulf Islands.

World Famous Murals and Sculptures
Local Treasures
Today, there are 63 amazing murals and various sculptures, which can all be viewed on foot, 365 days a year. The themes of the murals vary from indigenous heritage and logging lore to rail history, nature and immigration. Follow the yellow footprints at your own pace from one mural to the next or take a narrated tour in an old fashioned, horse-drawn carriage.
